SUPPORT – CALLS FOR PROJECTS

  • Calls for Proposals (CfP): The Foundation regularly launches Calls for Proposals, following the approval of the Executive Board. The Terms of Reference (TOR) of each Call is reviewed by the Foundation’s Science Council and is approved by the Bureau of the Executive Board. The TOR defines the objectives of a given Call as well as various elements related to its implementation (e.g., eligibility and evaluation criteria and process, timeframe, etc.)

Proposals submitted under each Call are reviewed by external evaluators and/or members of the Foundation’s Science Council. The latter recommends to the Bureau of the Executive Board a set of proposals to be funded. Following the Bureau’s approval of proposals to be funded, the Executive Board is informed of the result of the process during its meeting following the decision of the Bureau.

  • Commissioned Procedure: This procedure is intended to support the realization of a major, flagship project or smaller projects co-developed with partners. Flagship projects may receive funding between €300K and €3M.

The Bureau of the Executive Board makes the decision to commission projects after the Foundation Director has examined all necessary files and documentation related to them. The level of funding and programming must be consistent with the multiannual programming approved by the Executive Board. The Board is informed of the launch of such a process during its meeting following the decision of the Bureau.

Just like for CfPs, Terms of Reference are developed for this purpose and submitted to the Bureau, for approval. The TOR define the objectives of a given Call as well as various elements related to their implementation (e.g., eligibility and evaluation criteria and process, timeframe, etc.). External evaluators and/or members of the Foundation’s Science Council review the proposal(s) coming out of this process, unless otherwise indicated. The SC provides recommendation to the Bureau of the Executive Board on whether or not the proposal is ready to be implemented and if it can be funded as presented. Following the Bureau’s approval of proposals to be funded, the Executive Board is informed of the result of the process during its meeting following the decision of the Bureau.

Only proposals submitted by a unit of the Foundation network are eligible, unless otherwise indicated in the TOR of the action. Regardless of the process that led to its funding, the projects supported by the Foundation must meet the following conditions:

  • Consistency with the objectives of the Foundation: promoting scientific excellence, innovation, the structuring role, interdisciplinarity, the consolidation of international partnerships, and the relevance of socio-economic and sustainable development issues.
  • Bring added value with regard to the founding organisations and existing funding agencies.

Particular attention is given to the proposals:

  • Involving several units of the network and external partners,
  • And /or focused on an issue or a strategic topic likely to increase the international visibility of the network,
  • And /or exploratory, both risky and innovative.
