Physiological and Molecular Responses of Rice to Drought Stress
Upland rice and lowland rice use different strategies to tolerate drought stress. To investigate the mechanisms underlying stress tolerance, physiological and proteomic responses were compared between the two rice cultivars. Several proteins were found to be differently expressed in response to drought stress between the two cultivars. Expression of aquaporins of the plasma membrane intrinsic protein (PIP) subfamily was systematically analyzed. Our data suggested that the lowland rice used drought tolerant strategy whereas upland rice used drought avoidance strategy.
Furthermore, the structural basis for the difference in water permeability between aquaporins of the PIP1 and PIP2 subclasses was studied. A residue which can affect the water permeability was identified via computer assisted homology modeling and molecular dynamic simulation.
