Agropolis Fondation launches the Louis MALASSIS International Scientific Prize for Agriculture and Food as a tribute to Prof. Louis Malassis (1918-2007), a highly esteemed French educator, agronomist and agro-economist. He was an ardent supporter of farmers' cause and founder of Agropolis and Agropolis Museum.
The Prize aims to recognize individuals, or a group of individuals, for their exemplary and promising contribution in promoting innovation through research, development and capacity building in the North, South or in the Mediterranean in order to improve food and agricultural systems sustainability as well as contribute to addressing food security and poverty reduction.
To be conferred once every two years, the Prize will be awarded for the first time in 2010 during the 1st Global Conference on Agricultural Research for Development (GCARD) on 28-31 March 2010 in Montpellier, France.
The Prize consists of two categories:
To be eligible for the Prize, candidates should be nominated by an academic or research organization (private or public), a civil society organization (e.g., NGO, farmers organizations), or a private sector (e.g., small/medium enterprises).
The deadline for submission of nominations was last 20 January 2010 (14:00, GMT).
The winner will be selected by an international jury constituted by the president of the Foundation.
This initiative complements the Louis Malassis Literary Prize given by the Association Paroles de paysans du monde.
