Seminar to promote mathematics-agriculture interface

Computational plantAgropolis Fondation organized a seminar on 18 March 2009 at the Louis Malassis Amphitheater, Agropolis International in Montpellier.

The French National Institute for research in computer science and Control (INRIA) and the pole MIPS (Montpellier Scientific research and training pole) joined Foundation in the organization of this event.

About 60 persons from various disciplines participated in this half-day event aimed at promoting the interface between agriculture, mathematics and ICST (Information and Communication Sciences and Technologies).

Presentations on five projects selected from the joint AF-INRIA Call for Proposal illustrated this interface. Projects presented varied in terms of size - from Pl@ntNet receiving 3M€ funding to an initiative on landscape modeling with a 60K€ funding) - and in terms of scale - from plant cell to landscape. Some private enterprises from the Languedoc-Roussillon (LR) Region, notably BIONATICS, ENVILYS, and ONDALYS presented their respective initiatives on the subject. Transfert-LR, a local association providing technical support to small enterprises in the Languedoc Roussillon region participated as well.

Agropolis Fondation and INRIA have launched joint Calls for Proposals twice focusing on the theme "Computational Plants and Ecosystems". The first Call, launched in 2008, resulted to supporting 10 projects for a total cost of €4M, including €3M for Pl@ntNet, while the second Call is on-going.

The 10 projects under the 2008 Call involve 11 international scientists and partners from 18 countries including Canada, China, Germany, the Netherlands, United Kingdom, USA, Tunisia and South Africa.
