Joint organisation of the 27th International Congress of Conservation Biology and the 4th European Congress of Conservation Biology.
This is the first time that such a joint organisation is envisaged, in order to allow a unique meeting of European biodiversity conservation stakeholders with those from the rest of the world. It is also the first time that the international congress has been organised in Europe since 2002, which will attract to Montpellier scientists from all over the world who have so far had few opportunities to discover the potential of the regional scientific community, particularly that grouped within the two Labex Agro and CeMEB.
The theme of the congress is "Mission biodiversity: choosing new paths for conservation". It reflects a profound change in the understanding of conservation approaches, which were previously focused on the strict protection of natural areas to be protected against all human activities considered to be disruptive and destructive, towards a much more integrated vision in which the preservation of ecosystems and biodiversity is perceived as an element of sustainable development, and in which the concept of ecosystem services, with all its interest but also its limits, is becoming central.
Bring together in Montpellier, around the issues outlined above, 1500 to 200 people, researchers, teachers, doctoral students, conservation practitioners, managers of natural areas, public authorities, international institutions (IUCN for example) and NGOs.
