Preparation of a side-event at COP21 aiming to coordinate the expertise of the units of the Montpellier campus, to include them in the national and international dynamics by associating the SUD teams in particular to this dynamic.
The objective is to respond to this double challenge:
to identify knowledge gaps and scientific obstacles, particularly in tropical agro-ecosystems, in order to achieve the 4P1000 objective, taking into account the diversity of production systems, particularly in tropical regions. These points should feed into the terms of reference of the emerging international 4P1000 programme.
to prepare an advocacy for the COP Side-event (1 and 10 December) to put Agriculture in the Lima-Paris agenda.
The main activity will be a 1-day workshop with about 50 participants. The objectives are to position the international programme vis-à-vis other existing initiatives (part 1) and to engage in exchanges and prepare the scientific community to respond to the 4 pillars of the next one (part 2: parallel workshops):
Knowledge of soil carbon sequestration (or loss), its sensitivity to climatic and agronomic variables and its impact on the greenhouse gas balance of the land sector,
assessing the performance of virtuous agricultural practices and their consequences on sequestration and on other production and regulation services
supporting innovations and stimulating them through appropriate policies
monitoring and reporting of results (MRV), particularly to farmers, which will require the invention of new institutional and financial mechanisms
