Abstract

Anthocyanins are one of the main families of polyphenols and are among the most widespread pigments in the plant kingdom, responsible for the red or blue colouring of plant organs and their processing products. Research on these molecules is booming and interest in these pigments continues to grow in a wide range of scientific fields such as plant genetics and improvement, plant development and adaptation to the climate, relations between plants and insects, the quality of plant products, nutrition and health, but also in the industrial field, particularly the food, pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries. This theme is also strongly present within the Agropolis Fondation network. A search of bibliographic databases (Web ISI) with the keyword anthocyanins shows 130 publications by authors from Montpellier and Avignon over the period 2005-2014, mainly from Agropolis Fondation units, in various research fields (SPO, Qualisud, SQPOV, LEPSE, Systems, AGAP, DIADE, IATE, etc.).
The first International Conference on Anthocyanins (IWA) was organised in Melbourne (Australia) in 2000, with the aim of bringing together the international academic and industrial community working on anthocyanins in various fields. This conference has been followed by six other successful conferences, in Australia (2002, 2004), New Zealand (2006), Japan (2009), USA (North Carolina, 2011), and Portugal (2013). The IWA is the only international conference devoted exclusively to anthocyanins, from their biosynthesis in plants and their role in plant-environment interactions, through their analysis and physicochemical properties, to their impact on health and nutrition and their importance to industry.

Goal

The purpose of this request is to support the organization of the next international congress on anthocyanins (IWA 2015), for which UMR SPO is responsible. The organization of IWA2015 in Montpellier will allow scientists to present their most recent work on anthocyanins and, more specifically, the Agropolis Fondation scientific community to strengthen its visibility on this topic and reinforce its international network.
