The international conference "Global Food Security" aims to bring together the international scientific community around the issues of food security, addressing it in its spatial dimension, from local to global, and the interdisciplinarity specific to food systems. Initiated in the Netherlands in 2013, the conferences are now organised on a biennial basis, alternating the continents on which they take place. The 4th conference will be held in Montpellier in June 2020, which represents an opportunity for the entire Agropolis scientific community, which is at the forefront of these themes, to contribute to a state-of-the-art analysis, to develop new inspiring visions and innovative methods from different disciplines. It aims to better understand environmental, nutritional, agricultural, demographic, socio-economic, political, technological and institutional factors, and then to question the costs and effects of current and future food security. These analyses will also take into account the many contextual factors that interact with food systems: climate change, urbanisation, the greening of the economy and data-driven technologies. While these parameters will be at the heart of the discussions, the conference will also address the triple burden of malnutrition: hunger, micronutrient deficiencies and obesity. By exploring the state of the art at the interdisciplinary level of food systems transformation, and by analysing the trade-offs and synergies involved, Conference will contribute to informing actions towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals at different levels across space and time. This conference will contribute to energise and expand the network of researchers in the community at the international level.


One of the main objectives of this event is to provide a platform for exchange between scientists, but also with institutional and civil society actors on the theme of food security. It will also provide evidence of the importance of interdisciplinarity and the integration of science to develop public policies and programmes to support states in achieving the objectives of international agendas, in particular the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The conference will focus on analyses and perspectives and will therefore particularly encourage contributions on the following cross-cutting themes
1. Food Security and Sustainable Development Goals: synergies, tensions and trade-offs
2. Circularity of food systems at local, regional or global levels
3. Food security and politics, governance, institutions and trade
4. Transitions to post-carbon food systems in a post-carbon economy
5. How to assess future food security: foresight, forecasting, projection, forecasting and exploring the future
6. Influencing food consumption and demand by taking into account the food environment
7. Development, impact and ethics of new and data-driven technologies in food systems More specialised topics on the four food security themes are also sought
8. Availability: production, distribution and exchange of food
9. Access: affordability, allocation and preference of food
10. Utilization: nutritional value, social value and safety of food
11. Stability and dynamics of food security aspects
