Abstract

The ARIMNet2 Project (Agricultural Research In the Mediterranean Network), funded by the European Union under FP7, started in January 2014 for a duration of 4 years. It aims at coordinating National Agricultural Research Programmes to strengthen the capacities of its members to address in a coordinated way the major challenges that the Mediterranean agriculture is facing.
ARIMNet2 brings together 24 partners (research institutions, ministries and funding agencies) from 15 countries from the Northern, Southern and Eastern Mediterranean. Among them nine are members of the EU (Croatia, Cyprus, France, Greece, Italy, Malta, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain), two are Associated Countries (Turkey, Israel), and four are Mediterranean Partner Countries (Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia).
While agriculture in the countries around the Mediterranean is facing common issues and challenges, Agricultural Research in the Mediterranean is scattered and requires a coordination effort to step up the cooperation. Joining forces to promote innovative research and cooperation is the purpose and the ambition of the members of the ARIMNet2 Project.

The biannual meeting of the project was held on June 11, 12 and 13 in Montpellier (France).
On the first day, the ARIMNet2 partners organized a presentation of the mid-term results of the ten research projects which were funded through the ARIMNet Joint Call 2011. Each of these transnational projects gathers several research teams from the Northern, Southern and Eastern Mediterranean. They cover a broad range of issues that are strategic for Mediterranean agriculture regarding : the sustainability of crops, livestock and production systems; the efficiency in water and other resources use in agriculture; the sustainable management of crop and animal health; and the production and trade of safe and quality products all along the supply chain.
Please find below the interviews of the project coordinators, that were realized on that occasion: http://arimnet2.net/index.php/component/content/article/103-video/173-arimnet2-meeting-june-11-12-and-13-2014-montpellier-france?pid=16

The two following days were dedicated to the actions planned in ARIMNet2: launching of a transnational Joint Call, implementation of joint activities to develop mobility and capacity building, reflection on the actions that could be carried out in order to strengthen the link between research and innovation. These two last sessions mobilized the 10 representatives of the selected projects and the whole ARIMNet2 consortium.
Several actions were decided and discussed.

Perspectives

Following that seminar, the second Call for proposal was launched in September 2014 (http://arimnet2.net/). The pre-proposals are being scientifically evaluated.

Some possible joint activities, complementary to the Call for proposal, were proposed on that occasion: the first one will be implemented at the beginning of 2015.

Another scientific dissemination seminar will be organized at the end of these 10 funded projects, thogether with the Kick-Off meeting of the ARIMNet2 projects selected for funding through the second Call for proposals.
