The project aims to better quantify two key ecosystem services, carbon sequestration and wood production, in logged and managed Amazonian tropical forests. This is a prerequisite to propose new evidence-based forest management practices concealing both economic and environmental sustainability. To do so, long-term impacts of selective logging on main carbon pools and timber volume recoveries will be assessed in several permanent forest plots monitored since the 80’s by both proponent institutions.
• assessing the recovery of both timber volume and main carbon pools (tree biomass, coarse wood debris, litter and carbon in soil) after logging,
• finding the best compromise between timber production and carbon storage
• consolidating data related to the impact of silviculture in Amazonian forests.
The project will benefit from the recent development of a pantropical network (Tropical managed Forest Observatory (TmFO) Sist et al. 2015) in South America to address the regional response of Amazon forests to logging. This network, set up in 2012, rely upon an international panel of researchers and foresters working across the Amazon Basin.
The French project leader will be responsible for the coordination of the French researchers and will ensure their participation to the three workshops according to the objectives and the skill of the French researchers involved. The French project leader will also work in strong collaboration with the Brazilian leader to make sure that the activities are carried out within the schedule and that the outputs will be delivered according to the planning.
The Brazilian project leader will ensure that field data collection will be carried out according to the methods defined and within the schedule. Each site coordinator is responsible for field data collection, data entrance in the database and to ensure the management of the site database.
